The au pair program is overseen by the US Department of State. Au pairs enter the USA on a J-1 visa, valid for 12 months. Au pairs can work up to 10 hours per day, to a maximum 45 hours per week on the schedule your family needs. While working au pairs provide responsible childcare, supervise playdates, plan, set up and clean up craft projects, prepare meals, take care of children's laundry, light housekeeping - the list is nearly endless!
When "off duty" au pairs are a family member. Similar to a niece or nephew who would stay with you, they participate in the household (helping to prepare family meals, setting the table, cleaning up, etc). Most families invite their au pairs for family day trips to the park, the zoo or a baseball game. Au pairs also enjoy the opportunity to socialize with other au pairs and friends in the area, similar to any young adult.
